A terrace or balcony in Noida faces some of the most punishing conditions any outdoor surface can encounter: 45°C summer heat, intense UV radiation, and then months of monsoon humidity. Most decking products sold in India are not designed for this. This guide tells you what is.
The Four Decking Options for Noida
1. WPC Decking (Wood-Polymer Composite) — Our Standard Recommendation
WPC is the material we install most frequently in Noida, and for good reason: it was designed for exactly this climate.
WPC boards are made from a blend of wood fibre and recycled PVC, making them:
- 100% waterproof — they will not absorb water, warp, or rot
- UV-stabilised — they resist bleaching in direct Noida sunlight
- Dimensionally stable — they don't expand and contract with temperature swings the way natural wood does
- Low maintenance — a seasonal clean is all they need
Modern WPC has also addressed the old criticism about looking plastic. The best boards have textured, grain-embossed surfaces that photograph and feel convincingly like real wood.
Price range (installed): ₹120–180 per square foot
Expected lifespan: 15–25 years with basic maintenance
2. Composite Decking (Premium Grade)
Premium composite decking sits above WPC in terms of performance and aesthetics — and cost.
The difference is in the capping: composite boards have a full polymer shell around the entire board, not just the face. This means no water ingress from the sides or bottom, better resistance to staining, and a surface that stays cooler underfoot in summer than standard WPC.
The colour range on premium composite is broader and more nuanced — the greys, charcoals, and warm browns are more convincing because the colour runs through the capping layer rather than being a surface print.
Price range (installed): ₹175–280 per square foot
Expected lifespan: 25–30 years
Best for: Terraces where aesthetics are a priority and budget allows
3. Natural Hardwood Decking
Natural hardwood — typically teak, ipe, or merbau — looks extraordinary. We won't pretend otherwise.
But we'll be honest: natural hardwood in Noida is a commitment. It needs:
- Oiling or sealing before monsoon every year
- Cleaning and retreating post-monsoon
- Board replacement every 8–12 years regardless of care
If you love the look of real wood and you're prepared for the maintenance, hardwood can be the right choice for covered terraces or shaded balconies. For uncovered south or west-facing terraces that get full sun and full monsoon, we typically recommend against it.
Price range (installed): ₹200–350 per square foot
Expected lifespan (with maintenance): 10–15 years
4. Stone-Effect Deck Tiles
For balconies where the look of natural stone is the goal, large-format stone-effect porcelain tiles on a pedestal system can be excellent.
The benefits:
- No maintenance beyond cleaning
- Extremely durable — stone-effect porcelain doesn't scratch, stain, or fade
- Excellent drainage when installed on pedestals
- Genuinely looks like stone because it is fired ceramic
The limitations:
- Harder underfoot than WPC
- Pedestal systems add height, which can be a consideration for low balcony walls
- Cold in winter mornings (relevant for ground-floor terraces)
Price range (installed): ₹160–240 per square foot depending on tile quality
The Questions to Ask Before You Decide
Is the terrace waterproofed underneath?
Decking goes over the existing waterproofing, not instead of it. If your terrace has existing waterproofing damage, fix it before laying decking. Decking makes future waterproofing repairs significantly more complicated.
What direction does it face?
South and west-facing terraces in Noida get the most intense afternoon sun. This matters for material choice (colour stability) and for how hot the surface gets underfoot. Light-coloured WPC or capped composite with heat-dissipating additives is worth paying for if this is your situation.
How is drainage handled?
Decking installed without proper drainage gaps becomes a water trap in monsoon. Clip-fixed WPC systems maintain consistent drainage gaps automatically. Glued-down systems require careful planning.
What's on the balcony floor now?
Most WPC and composite systems can be installed over existing tiles or concrete provided the surface is reasonably level. Loose tiles, significant cracks, or pooling water require remediation first.
Our Recommendation by Use Case
| Situation | Best Choice |
|---|---|
| Standard apartment balcony | WPC, mid-range |
| Premium terrace, budget allows | Capped composite |
| Covered terrace, want real wood | Natural hardwood |
| Want zero maintenance, stone look | Stone-effect porcelain on pedestals |
| Pool surround or wet area | Capped composite or anti-slip stone-effect |
| Children's play area | WPC with anti-slip surface finish |
